Reliance & Shamrock III (1903)

Two of most extreme boats in the history of the America's Cup, the Reliance and Shamrock III marked the end of a trend under the Seawanhaka Rule. The rule, which encouraged long sailplan bases and overhangs, had already been revoked at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in 1901, but the match still carried through in New York in 1903, demonstrating the extremity of the designs, with the Reliance carrying the largest gaff sloop rig ever. The rule was replaced in the same year for an early version of the Universal Rule, so they were the last boats of their kind.
